“Turn that despair into hopefulness”: Students and experts talk climate anxiety, potential solutions

I wrote a solutions-oriented article exhibiting how climate anxiety impacts students and illustrating how experts and students advise managing that stress. I spoke with Northwestern students, a professor and a therapist specializing in climate anxiety, while conducting research on the subject. It was interesting to see the work that students around me are doing to address their own climate anxiety. I also learned a lot from working with my editors to restructure and revise this story to ensure it had the greatest impact possible.

I am interested in writing stories that localize international and national issues, so covering the work that Chicago was doing to aid asylum seekers moved from Texas into Chicago was important to me. I conducted extensive research on the situation and spoke with Chicago and Cook County government employees and community activists to understand local aid efforts. I also spoke with a refugee rights coalition and the Illinois Department of Human Services. By covering this sensitive topic through rigorous sourcing, I sought to highlight solutions while creating awareness.

I had the opportunity to speak with and write about Evanston organizations' work to combat food insecurity, which had increased in Cook County over the two years prior to the story. I pitched this story to my editor when I wondered about how food insecurity had changed over the pandemic and what people were doing to address this shift. I featured several types of organizations, from food pantries to social justice groups, sharing how they've approached the rise in food insecurity during the pandemic. I appreciated the passion that all of the representatives had for their organizations, and I learned a lot about their various approaches to addressing food insecurity. I learned about structuring a longer piece and incorporating the most important details to ensure the story is cohesive and representative through intensive collaboration with my editors.
